A Brief History
The Drummond Pipe Band was formed in September of 1989 by Iain MacCrimmon, Pipe Major and Arnie Stone, Pipe Sergeant, both formerly of the Edmonton (now Alberta) Caledonia Pipe Band. At that time there were no fewer than five members of the Stone family in the band, playing pipes, tenor drum and snare drum. Little wonder then that the band grew up to be Big Rock, the name that was assumed in July 1993, in recognition of the sponsorship provided at that time by the Calgary-based Big Rock Brewery.

The band first carried the name Big Rock to the Fort Edmonton Highland Games in the summer of 1993, by which time Arnie Stone was Pipe Major, having taken over in 1992 when Iain MacCrimmon moved with his family to live in Scotland.

In 1994 the Big Rock Pipe Band toured Scotland under the leadership of P/M A. Stone, and caused quite a stir, by its size (and sound of course), marching onto the field at the World Pipe Band Championships.

In September 1995, George Shears took over as Pipe Major, to be succeeded in the Fall of 1997 by the present Pipe Major: Dave Trew.

The Big Rock Pipe Band has been very successful in its ten-year history, both in pipe band competition where we have been Alberta Champions in Grade III or Grade IV, and sometimes both, or the past five years, and in parades. We've been named Best Pipe Band at the Edmonton Klondike Days Parade for 5 of the last 6 years. In the Calgary Stampede Parade in 1997 we were honoured as the best non-massed pipe band. In 1997 and 1998 we were invited by the General Stewart Legion to take part in the annual Lethbridge Tattoo where we appeared with such other groups as the Calgary City Police Pipe band, Canmore's Three Sisters Pipe Band and the U.S. Marine Corps Drill Team.

Stirling Castle, Scotland 2000
Stirling is considered one of the strongest and most impregnable castles in Scotland. It sits on a tall rocky volcanic crag and is approached by a long, winding road (the Castle Wynd) through the old town. The last photograph in this set was taken at King's Knot. "The Knott" was a popular location for fêtes champêtres (costumed garden parties).

Grande Prairie Legion Tattoo
While visiting family in Rycroft this month, I took the opportunity to volunteer with my Legion Branch 224 at the Grande Prairie Legion Military Tattoo. It took place on June 09 as a spectacular kick-off to the June 11 AB-NWT RCL 2007 Convention and was attended by a small but very enthusiastic audience who were just blown away by the entertaining program and calibre of the music.

All of the bands were just terrific, including our own E&D and the stirring massed performance at the end caused many a tear in the house. I didn't figure out the telephoto autofocus on my spiffy new camera until the next day but managed a few shots, now in the gallery. The hosts, the Grande Prairie Legion, did a good job and a great time was had by the E&D members.

("The term military tattoo, referring to a military drum performance, dates from the seventeenth century when the British Army were fighting in the Low Countries (Belgium and The Netherlands). Drummers from the garrison were sent out into the towns at 21:30 hrs (9:30PM) each evening to inform the soldiers that it was time to return to barracks. The process was known as Doe den tap toe and encouraged the inn keepers to "turn off the taps", stop serving beer and send the soldiers home for the night. The drummers continued to play until the curfew at 22:00 hrs (10:00PM).

Over the years, the process became more of a show and often included the playing of the first post at 21:30 hrs and the last post at 22:00. Bands and displays were included and shows were often conducted by floodlight or searchlight. Tattoos were commonplace in the late 1800s with most military and garrison towns putting on some kind of show or entertainment during the summer months.")

APRIL 2002
Big Rock Pipe Band took part in a final farewell to the fallen soldiers of the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. The April 28 service was attended by 16,000 people at the Skyreach Centre in Edmonton. We join with others throughout Canada in expressing sympathy for the friends and families of the four Canadian soldiers killed by friendly-fire bombing on a training field near Khandahar.
The third annual Traditions Concert was a great success. I've heard the band before but this was the first concert that I've attended and I can certainly see why there's such a scramble for tickets. The Big Rock Pipe Band hosted a grand afternoon featuring polished performances by The Drums, Rockettes, Rowdies, Shuttle Pipes, Grade 3 and Grade 4 Bands. The Combined Pipe Band was breathtaking.
Master of Ceremonies David Nevett charmed a capacity crowd at the Winspear Centre where guests included The Royal Canadian Artillery Band, Amelia Kaminski and the Celtic Fiddlers of Edmonton, The Matterin School of Irish Dance and The Strathcona School of Dancing. Soloists Catherine Kubash and Andre Gervais performed a lovely rendition of the Rankin's
"Fare Thee Well Love" and vocalist Bart Hasselfield joined with the Grade 3 Pipers for a McCartney/Laine favourite, "Mull of Kintyre". Everyone was just terrific. Dawn Woolsey, webmaster.
Big Rock Pipe Band is Bob Dunsire's Web Site of the Week April 19, 2002. Mr. Dunsire built and maintains the Bagpipe Web Directory. We are very pleased to be acknowledged by such an excellent and comprehensive guide to bagpiping on the web. Please visit him from our Links page.
Congratulations to Morgan Page, Grade 2 Aggregate Champion. Morgan placed first in Jig-Hornpipe and MSR (March, Strathspey & Reel) at the BCPA competitions!
Big Rock Pipe Band placed second in the Grade 3 Mini-Bands competion at the BCPA 70th Annual Gathering in Vancouver. First place went to the Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band; Chilliwack Pipe Band took third place. Visit the photo gallery for pictures from the events.
Big Rock Pipe Band will host its third Traditions Concert at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music in Edmonton. The concert will be held on April 21st at 2:00 pm.
